A Walk in the Park
No matter how many times you have visited your local zoo, a walk through the Vallarta Zoo (Zoologico de Vallarta to locals) is a special experience. This is a modern park with a mission to educate and enlighten humans and help us live in greater harmony with the natural world. The long-term vision includes preservation and support for many of the Earth’s vanishing species.
As you walk through the zoo’s jungle setting, you’ll encounter a wide variety of mammals, birds and reptiles, some of them familiar to you and some not so much. The staff has done their very best to provide a natural habitat for each species. And Zoo Vallarta is particularly proud of its breeding program, so depending on when you visit, you may have a chance to “ooh” and “aah” over youngsters in the nursery.

The zoo is open seven days each week from 8:30 in the morning to 6:00 in the evening, and the price is very reasonable. It is a bit south of Puerto Vallarta, near the town of Mismaloya. You can drive there from your villa rental Puerto Vallarta, but it is probably easier to catch the bus that runs from the city through Mismaloya to the intersection of Basilio Badillo and Insurgentes. Jump off the bus at the entrance to Hotel Barcelo, cross the street and walk down the road that follows the river – you’ll be there in no time.
